Frequently asked questions
What made Caro think to make a "chandelier", preferably referred to as "lighting sculpture", out of bike parts?
Your lighting sculptures must weigh a ton! Do they?
You'd be surprised to learn that these lighting sculptures are comparable in weight to traditional crystal chandeliers. As with your crystal chandelier, Facaro recommends that the artwork be professionally installed by a licensed, bonded, and insured electrical contractor.
Where do you get the bicycle chains? Are they new?
They're not new! It's an integral part of the concept that they be reclaimed. Caro sources her material from 120 different bike shops within 200 miles of LA.
Why are the lighting sculptures numbered?
Tell me about the "Connect" series
What is "Facaro"?
Facaro is a mash up of the artist's name, Carolina Fontoura Alzaga: F from Fontoura, A from Alzaga, Caro is short for Carolina
Why does Facaro use the term "lighting sculpture"?
Caro's background is in fine art, not product nor lighting design, and as a result the conceptual underpinnings of this body of work are vitally important to her. The 'Connect' series would not exist without the questions it aims to explore. Caro views and presents each piece in the 'Connect' series as sculpture with a function, however the term 'functional sculpture' offers an incomplete description of the overall work, so she settled on the term 'lighting sculpture'.
Does Caro do all the work by herself?
No. Caro works with an engineer to ensure the structural safety of her designs and a structural welding company to fabricate the armatures. The rest of the work is done by her and sometimes a small team of helpers. UL inspections are performed by Neptune Glassworks. Neptune Glassworks, LLC. is a fully listed UL studio offering UL Listing for third party fixtures.
Tell me about the Lucienne series
It's still a secret.
Are the lighting sculptures UL approved?
They can be! UL inspections are available at cost and performed by Neptune Glassworks. Neptune Glassworks, LLC. is a fully listed UL studio offering UL Listing for third party fixtures.
Do you do custom work?
I am open to discussing custom projects.

Facaro Limited Warranty:
Facaro warrants all its artwork to be free from defects in material and workmanship, subject to certain conditions and exclusions, for the following time periods from the date the artwork was shipped to the original end use purchaser.
Indoor Lighting sculptures:
What Facaro will do: Facaro will, at its election, repair, replace or make appropriate adjustment where Facaro inspection discloses any such defects occurring in normal usage within the applicable time period above, subject to the following conditions and exclusions.
What is not covered: The following costs, expenses and damages are not covered by the
provisions of this limited warranty: (i) labor costs including, but not limited to, such costs as the removal and re-installation of artwork; (ii) shipping and freight expenses required to return artwork to Facaro.
Original User: All warranties only apply to the original end use purchaser and original installation of artwork. This warranty is not transferable. If the purchaser is purchasing the artwork on behalf of a third party or for the purpose of resale, the warranty will cover the first end-user of the artwork as long as that end-user abides by the installation and maintenance requirements previously set forth in these terms and conditions.
The provisions of this warranty do not apply to artwork: (i) used in commercial applications; (ii) used for purposes for which they are not designed or intended; (iii) which have been subjected to alteration, abuse, misuse, negligence or accident; (iv) which have been improperly stored, installed, maintained or operated; (v) which have been used in violaBon of written instructions provided by Facaro; (vi) which have been subjected to improper temperature, humidity or other environmental conditions; or (vii) which, based on Facaro’s examination, involve a failure to disclose to Facaro’s satisfaction warranty non-conformance. Additionally, this warranty DOES NOT COVER scratches, abrasions, or deterioration due to the use of paints, solvents, chemicals or abrasive cleaning techniques.
The above warranties also do not apply if: The original bill of sale, delivery date, or product number cannot be verified. The parts claimed to be defective are not returned for inspection if so requested by Facaro. The artwork is not in the possession of the original end use purchaser.
TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE: Please contact Facaro by emailing email@example.com. Please use the subject line: Art Collector Service Department.
Finish Warranty Exclusions: All artwork is for indoor use only.
Raw Metal Finishes: Raw metal finishes are subject to change due to prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture, pollutants and other environmental conditions. Raw metal finishes will naturally mature over time, changing in appearance and creating a living finish. Thus, any claim for fading, discoloration or “patina” of a finish on a raw metal fixture is not covered by the above warranty.
Coastal Environments: The environment within ten miles of a sea coast can be extremely corrosive. Even with appropriate maintenance, artwork installed in this environment will typically deteriorate more than artwork installed in a less salt/humid environment. Some corrosion and/or deterioration is considered “normal wear” in this environment. Thus, any claim for finish failures or for corrosion of other components due to coastal environmental conditions is not covered by the above warranty.
Facaro’s maximum liability under any circumstances is limited to a maximum of the original
purchase price of the artwork. No action arising out of any claimed breach of this warranty by Facaro may be brought by the Original User more than one (1) year after the cause of action has arisen.
IMPLIED WARRANTIES INCLUDING THAT OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE EXPRESSLY LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE DURATION OF THIS WARRANTY. Facaro AND/OR SELLER DISCLAIMS ANY LIABILITY FOR SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.
Does Facaro install the artwork?
We do not. Facaro recommends that the artwork be professionally installed by a licensed, bonded, and insured electrical contractor. Failure to properly install the artwork and/or abide by the maintenance instructions will result in voiding any warranty.
